Young offenders’ art exhibition in ReadingAn art exhibition for youth offenders has been opened in reading recently, the Reading Evening Post reports;

Young offenders’ artwork was put on display at the CfBT (Centre for British Teachers) Education Trust’s headquarters in Reading.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Reading, Councillor Peter Beard and his wife Cynthia, viewed the annual exhibition at the Queen’s Road offices on Friday, January 9.

The exhibition showcased work by students taught by CfBT’s education teams within Huntercombe Young Offenders’ Institution in Henley, the Josephine Butler Unit at HMP Down View in Sutton and a young offenders’ institution in Rochester.

Councillor Beard said he was impressed with the standard of art being produced.

He added: "Some of it was truly spectacular with incredible attention to detail and a huge level of imagination from artists who are allegedly novices."

He added the exhibition revealed the hard work of both the prisoners and the CfBT tutors adding that the Trust’s work in supporting and encouraging young people was very important.

The CfBT Trust is committed to providing educational opportunities that allow individuals, institutions and organisations to maximise their potential.

Neil McIntosh, chief executive of the CfBT, said: "We believe that creating art provides a good way for all students – not just those in a secure unit – to develop skills and explore their talents while completing their academic studies."

The Trust provides education for young men in a dedicated centre at HMYOI Huntercombe.

It also provides a wide range of educational facilities – from vocational courses to GCSEs – but art is seen as a particularly valuable way for young offenders to improve their self-confidence while also dealing with their emotions and issues of patience and self-control.

To attend the exhibition call Karen Borrer at CfBT on 01189021256. (Source: Reading Evening Post – Young offenders’ art exhibition January 14, 2009.)
